One thing that is hard for young lawyers to understand is how to be tough and fight for your clients, without being a jerk. Often times, they do not even understand that not being a jerk is important. In the practice of law, the only thing you have is your reputation. Insurance companies, lawyers and especially Judges have long memories. Today, my associate contacted a lawyer to postpone a hearing. It was important to my client that this hearing be postponed. The lawyer sent my associate this email:
“Louis Haskell was always very good to me when I was just starting out 20+ years ago. For that reason, I will advise my covering attorney to put it out 60 days or so.”
In law, like in life, what goes around, comes around.
